Play

Toys designed for children with special needs are down-right clunky. I decided to look away from "special needs" toys and focus on a toy any kid can love; the rocking horse.

Observations

Parent's felt inclined to put away the developmental toys while having guests over or when cleaning the house. This seemed like an unfair compromise for a child. I saw an opportunity to design something beautiful, that parents would enjoy showing in their home.

I started looking at Scandinavian style furniture as well as organic wood forming techniques. For a soft texture I researched various felts and found an organic Merino wool. This Merino wool is naturally sustainable, anti-microbial, and hydrophobic.

Prototype feedback from physical therapists suggested that a low to the ground rocking toy could help children develop core muscles and gross motor skills, while providing more safety and stability.
